White Leghorn Chicken

Cheese came to The Zoo after he was hatched as a science experiment in a local classroom. He is one of the friendliest roosters you'll ever meet. During the open season, you'll often see him perusing the Gift Shop or sleeping in a keeper's lap.

Leghorns are domesticated, so they live wherever their human caretakers live.

Chickens are notoriously omnivorous, eating just about anything they can find, from fruits, seeds, and vegetation to insects, worms, and even small mammals.

It is believed that the leghorn breed of chicken originated in Tuscany, Italy.
