Moluccan Cockatoo

Born in 2003, Apollo came to The Zoo in 2014 with his friend, Monkey, a severe macaw. Though they are different species, they are best friends and can often be seen perched together.

Range

These cockatoos are native to forests in eastern Indonesia. Illegal capture for the pet trade and habitat loss are the biggest threat to this species, who are now listed as vulnerable.


Diet

The moluccan cockatoo diet mainly consists of nuts, seeds, and fruits, like coconuts.


Social Structure

This species breeds between December and March when food resources are plentiful. They also have a very strong bite.

Threats in the Wild

Unsustainable and illegal trapping and habitat loss through logging have threatened the Moluccan cockatoo for decades, causing their wild population to decrease over time.
